A Fine And Very Rare Two-Colour Gilt And Silvered Bronze Automaton And Musical Timepiece
Continental, probably German, circa 1775

Watch-type fusee and chain movement signed Fs mayer a la Ville de Karlsbad, a Vienne with verge and balance escapement and enamel dial with polychrome centre, a separate key-wound movement activated at will playing a tune on five bells and driving the automation features, the very detailed and highly finished yellow and pink gilt case in the form of an elaborate Classical fountain, the movements contained in the arched cresting, flanked by revolving foliate stems and surmounted by an automaton urn above silvered 'windows' divided by Corinthian pilasters flanking a flower filled urn, contained in a niche below a three-tiered waterfall with dragon spouts which apparently gush forth accompanied by the music, at the front waves ripple as ships and a variety of sea creatures pass by, the angled corners with two niches below 'tiled' roofs enclosing further automaton fountains with mask spouts, the whole rising from a plinth applied with delicately chased silvered and gilt panels depicting sporting scenes and raised on boldly cast dolphin feet, the reverse exquisitely engraved and chased with a door below an arched pediment and flanked by pilasters divided by ribbon-tied flowers with architectural scenes along the plinth, the sides with trophies and Neo-Classical urns above further architectural panels. Movement associated. 37cm. 14-1/2in.high.
